Unraveling My Viking Lineage: iGENEA DNA Test and the Heritage of Surname Hörner

Family name Hörner

Following my recent participation in an iGENEA DNA test, extensive findings revealed the deep connection of my paternal lineage to the Vikings through the German surname—Hörner. The test demonstrated that my DNA share notable similarity with the R1b haplogroup, a genetic lineage predominantly found in Viking descendants, linking the Hörner name to the noble Vikings warriors—Jarls, thus shed light on my rich and intriguing ancestry.

My fascination with genealogy and the desire to uncover my ancestral origins persuaded me to partake in an iGENEA DNA test recently. The insightful findings from the test were mainly centered around the surname Hörner—a name from my paternal lineage.

The surname Hörner hails from Germany and carries a rich heritage. Relying on the data produced by the iGENEA DNA test and employing scientific analytical approaches, it was deduced that the Hörner paternal lineage is deeply rooted in the ancient Viking heritage.

The iGENEA test performs a comprehensive Y-DNA analysis, assessing the paternal lineage. My DNA sample exhibited a higher degree of similarity with the R1b haplogroup, one predominantly found among Viking descendants. Contributing approximately 35%-45% of the genetic lineage among Scandinavian men, this haplogroup has long been associated with my surname—Hörner.

Furthermore, the analysis of the short tandem repeats (STRs) on my Y-chromosome demonstrated evidence of common ancestry with the Vikings. The STR profile of my DNA was comparable with the samples found in Viking burial sites, further strengthening the connection between the Hörner lineage and the seafaring Scandinavians.

Interestingly, the surname Hörner also displayed links to the historically prestigious Jarls—a class of noble warriors in the Viking era. Originating from the Old Norse word 'Jarl' meaning nobleman, it is fascinating to apprehend that the paternal lineage of the Hörner family might have been warrior chieftains in the Viking era.

The iGENEA DNA test experience has been an enlightening journey, revealing the roots of my past that seemed to be shrouded in mystery. It helped me understand that the Hörner ancestors played an integral part in shaping the history of the Viking era. Every discovery made during this ancestral quest has been a fascinating addition to my understanding of my lineage, truly making it a voyage worth undertaking.

L. Hörner
